Bio

Dr. Richard Chaffoo is a triple board certified plastic surgeon whose practice is limited to aesthetic plastic surgery including hair restoration surgery. Dr. Chaffoo practices with Susan Stuart, MD, FAAD who is a board certified dermatologist and expert in the medical evaluation and treatment of hair loss in men and women. They are the only hair restoration practice in Southern California directed by both a plastic surgeon and dermatologist. 

Dr. Chaffoo received his M.D. degree from Wake Forest University. He completed an additional nine years of post-graduate surgical training including two surgical residencies: Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. In addition, Dr. Chaffoo completed three additional fellowships in both Facial Plastic Surgery/Head & Neck Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and Burn Surgery at UCSD Medical Center. His one year Facial Plastic Surgery fellowship is approved by the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). Dr. Chaffoo is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He has been performing hair restoration surgery for approximately 25 years including manual, robotic FUE and strip surgery.

Dr. Chaffoo is the past President of the San Diego Plastic Surgery Society and former Chief, Plastic Surgery, Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas, Ca. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Chaffoo is an active member of the most prestigious plastic surgery societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the California Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the International Society of Plastic Surgery. 

Dr. Chaffoo lectures both nationally and internationally on plastic surgery topics and hair restoration surgery. He conducts frequent clinical preceptorships and training programs within his La Jolla practice for physicians from the USA and overseas who are interested in learning about hair loss and hair restoration techniques including robotic FUE methods.  Dr. Chaffoo is also a founding faculty member of the Global Hair Loss Summit and proudly participates in this educational summit annually.

Dr. Chaffoo is involved in basic science and clinical research as the medical advisor for Stemson Therapeutics, a La Jolla biotech company. His company has developed the world’s first cloning technology for human hair follicles in an animal model. Their continued research is aimed at developing a novel regenerative model for hair loss in men and women by cloning human hair follicles instead of harvesting hair follicles from the scalp or body. He has presented their research findings at numerous national and international societies.
