I appreciate Dr Bernstein’s comments about the work with ACell done by me and Gary Hitzig. There are a couple points I’d like to make. We have been able to combine plucked hair to create 2-4 hair “follicular units”. In slide 44 of my presentation, I show a 4 hair graft which we created by combining 4 plucked beard whiskers. Biopsy with horizontal histologic sectioning revealed relatively normal follicular unit microscopic appearance, according to the dermatopathologist we worked with. Therefore, we believe that by combining plucked hair, we can potentially create results that are similar to follicular unit grafting. Also, sebaceous glands were seen in regenerated follicles (see slide 47 and 39).

Hi Dr Cooley,
Can you explain your cautious attitude towards this discovery?
You mention possible applications being small localised procedures and repair work.
Why not full restoration, the possibility of which is suggested by the sum of your statements?
thanks
