the statue’s mouth and utter a lie, your hand
will be bitten off.
• In 2003, at the European Society of Hair
Restoration Surgery conference in Berlin, Germany,
she was awarded a certificate for “Ethics
in Hair Restoration Surgery.”
• In 2002, at the Italian Society of Hair
Restoration Surgery conference, she was awarded
the “Michelangelo” award for her aesthetic
ability in creating a natural appearance.
• In 2002, at the European Society of Hair
Restoration Surgery in London, UK, she was awarded

Dr. Keene’s Educational Background
Dr. Keene graduated from medical school at the University
of Minnesota in 1984. She went on to complete a
General Surgery residency at the University of Arizona
Health Sciences in Tucson, Arizona from 1984 to
1989. There she served as Chief Resident in her
final year of residency. Following residency, Dr
Keene received specialty training in trauma and
critical care at Tucson Medical Center, as well
as completing a fellowship in Endocrine surgery
with a world-renowned surgeon in Perth, Australia.
She completed postgraduate training in 1990. While
searching for a desired practice in surgery, she
was invited to learn the techniques of hair transplantation.
At that time, the predominant technique was still
punch-grafting. Dissatisfied with the unnatural
result created by punch grafting, Dr. Keene did
not pursue hair restoration full time until Dr.
Ron Shapiro shared with her techniques for incisional-micro-grafting
(later given the nomenclature follicular unit grafting).
With this hair restoration technique, in the hands
of a skilled surgeon with aesthetic sense, an aesthetically
natural result could be achieved. At that point,
Dr. Keene made the decision to focus her surgical
skills in the practice of Hair Restoration Surgery.
She has been performing follicular unit grafting
since that time.
Physician’s Hair Institute
Dr. Keene’s clinic, Physician’s Hair
Institute, in Tucson, AZ, utilizes state of the
art equipment. This includes a new form of magnification
that produces improved magnification over the standard
microscope used by most hair restoration surgery
practices in graft dissection. It involves a high-resolution
digital video camera, in conjunction with a backlight,
projected onto an LCD screen. Dr. Keene announced
this technique at the Orlando, Florida conference
in 2002, and presented the technique in 2003 at
the Italian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery
conference in Rome, Italy. The technique was well
received and is gradually being adapted by other
clinics. It is an improvement over the stereoscopic
microscope in that it allows the Dr. more direct
supervision, and is also improved ergonomics for
the doctors assistants, while allowing as much magnification
and more adjustable lighting than the microscope.
Moreover, Dr. Keene has designed a graft holder
that keeps the grafts hydrated during placing, an
important factor in graft survival. She has also
created a multi-recipient site scalpel that improves
the efficiency of creating incisions, but keeps
this critical step in the hands of the physician,
not the assistants.
Dr. Keene limits her surgery to one patient per
day, and has a very hands on approach in the surgery
room. She performs every aspect of the surgery,
from donor removal, to creating the recipient sites,
to placing the grafts. For more information on Dr.
Keene’s surgical procedure, please go to www.hairrestore.com.
Dr. Keene also performs surgery at the Shapiro Medical
Group in Bloomington, MN.
